ACT Now’s Statement on Chatham Tragedy

Yesterday, in Chatham, our worst fears became reality.

A place that was meant to be a safe, joyful space for children — an afterschool program where they laughed, learned, and felt protected — became the place of a horrific tragedy. A vehicle crashed into that space, stealing lives, injuring others, and leaving families, staff, and a whole community shattered.

As a mother and as someone who has spent years advocating for the safety and well-being of children across Illinois, my heart breaks alongside everyone affected. No parent should have to endure the pain of losing a child. No educator or staff member should have to carry the weight of witnessing such horror in a space that was supposed to be full of happiness and good.

To the families grieving today – please know that our hearts are with you. We are grieving with you. ACT Now Illinois stands with you in the long road to healing. And to the entire community, we pledge to support you in any way we can and to continue advocating for the safety and wellbeing of every child.
